The prospect of a third GHOSTBUSTERS film is an odd thing: on one hand fanboys want to see it more than anything, and on the other hand, it seems like a terrible, terrible idea. However, GHOSTBUSTERS co-creator Dan Ackroyd seems pretty confident that the project is going ahead, but he has confirmed that if it is to happen, it needs to be just right.
‘The script must be perfect,’ he was quoted as saying yesterday. ‘We cannot release a film that is any less than that. We have more work to do.’
For most, ‘perfect’ means the involvement of Bill Murray, whose character Peter Venkman was the star of the first two movies. Indeed, GHOSTBUSTERS made Murray’s career, and the thought of another film without seems like sacrilege. In fact, many fans will be hoping to see the Ghostbustin’ mantle handed down a new, younger generation of characters, avoiding the ‘Indiana Jones and the Mystical Zimmer Frame’ syndrome.
But the jury’s still out on whether Murray would return. previous reports have suggested that Murray is happy to put his character – and the franchise – to rest.
‘We have a deep, private personal relationship’ Ackroyd says. ‘We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I respect that.’
Despite the ambiguity over Murray’s return, Ackroyd is adamant that solicitor-turned-Ghostbuster Louis Tully should return, even though actor Rick Moranis has been retired from acting for 15 years.
‘If we can get the script to Ghostbusters 3 right,’ continues Ackroyd, ‘then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant.’
This will come as good news to many, as Moranis is a minor but integral component to the original GHOSTBUSTERS formula. Let’s hope Ackroyd extends the sentiment to all vital ingredients, and that the film only happens WITH Murray, even if just a cameo. And as far as re-casting Venkman goes… if that happens, we riot.
What do YOU think about a GHOSTBUSTERS without Bill Murray? Should the project even happen at all?
