What would happen if we knew the world would end tomorrow morning? That is the theme and circumstance that auteur, Abel Ferrara, addresses in his latest film, 4:44 LAST DAY ON EARTH. The Sci-fi fantasy, which stars Willem Dafoe, Paz de la Huerta, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Hipp, and Thomas Michael Sullivan, is an independent film, distributed under IFC Films. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, and is due for a limited release on March 23rd in the US (though no official date has been announced for the UK as yet, it is believed to be some time in April).
The story is Ferrara’s own take on a popular concept, and primarily follows Dafoe and de la Huerta as they embark upon the final hours of their lives, whilst trying to deal with this horrific phenomenon. Ferrera also wrote the screenplay for the highly anticipated pre-apocolyptic drama, which, if done well, has the potential to be a highly emotive piece of cinema; especially if they utilise Dafoe’s experience and infinitely fascinating face, which could convince even the most hardened of sceptics – with a well-timed scowl – that the world is indeed ending.
See what you think…
