Ackroyd Gives ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Update

Anyone who grew up during the 1980s will no doubt have a good idea of the effect on popular culture the GHOSTBUSTERS franchise had. The first film especially gave us the now-iconic logo, Ray Parker Jr’s classic theme tune and great performances from the whole cast – even Rick Moranis!

With a script by THE OFFICE regulars Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky floating around Hollywood for some time now, interest has picked up over the last year with Dan Ackroyd, in particular hoping to get the project off the ground. Unfortunately Bill Murray, who played the deadpan Peter Venkman, has been against the idea, leaving fans wondering, if a third installment will ever happen. Writer and star Dan Ackroyd has given this latest update:

At this point it’s in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and co-star Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved.

Murray’s got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it. I know we’d have a lot of fun but I can’t be mad at him. He’s a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn’t want to know.

We’re not going to do a movie that exploits the franchise. The script has to be perfect. I’m the cheerleader, but I’m only one voice in the matter. It’s a surety that Bill Murray will not do the movie, however there is still interest from the studio.

So there you have it, if a three-quel does happen, it will most certainly be without Bill Murray. Will another GHOSTBUSTERS be worth seeing without, lets be honest, the best thing about the franchise in the first place? Hopefully if the script is completed to Murray’s liking, he may well change his mind, as for now it is a no go. What do you guys think of a Murray-free GHOSTBUSTERS 3?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
