THN first reported last week that THE KILLING and THE DARKEST HOUR’s star Joel Kinnaman had been offered the lead of Alex Murphy, in Jose Padhila’s ROBOCOP reboot. Now we can officially confirm the actor has signed a deal with MGM, to headline as the tragic Detroit officer brought back from the brink, as a metallic supercop.
It will be a tough ask for Padhila and Kinnaman to top Paul Verhoeven and Peter Weller’s now classic combination. The 1987 ultraviolent actioner is still considered one finest films of the 80s. Two disappointing sequels followed, that never came close to matching the original for epic ferocity and sarcastic satire.
Lets hope practical effects wizard Rob Bottin is involved in some aspect, as they are sure to re-design his iconic metal bodysuit in order to give this new film its own identity. As for the role of the evil Clarence Boddicker, do any of you guys have any clues as to who could top Kurtwood Smith’s villian?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
