Josh Trank To Get A Hit Of ‘Venom’ With Spider-Man Spin-Off

Director Josh Trank has seen his stock rise after  ‘found-footage’ superpower-thriller CHRONICLE found commercial and critical success. His impressive debut, on a budget of only $12 million, had previously led to rumours that Fox were considering giving Trank their FANTASTIC FOUR reboot. Now it appears he’ll helm a spin-off blockbuster of Spider-Man super-villain VENOM.

Sam Raimi’s massively disappointing SPIDER-MAN 3, saw Topher Grace together with some stunning visual-effects bring the character to lacklustre-life. Word is this new feature will try to conceive the character as an alien anti-hero, as opposed to the straight-up evildoer intent on creating chaos.

Sony is currently in early negotiations with Trank, while a new screenwriter is being sought to polish up a previous draft of the script. No cast announcements are expected until the script is completed and the director is locked on, but Grace is not expected to return as the lead.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
