Character posters have been released for the upcoming dark comedy BERNIE, starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey.
Loosely based on a true story, Black stars as Bernie Tiede, a mortician living in Texas. Bernie becomes friends with MacLaine’s character, an elderly woman whose millionaire husband dies. Suddenly, MacLaine disappears and Bernie becomes very wealthy – suspicious? Very!
This is a reunion between Black and director Richard Linklater, who worked together on SCHOOL OF ROCK (2003). The screenplay for this collaboration was co-written by Linklater and Skip Hollandsworth – the idea taken from an article written by Hollandsworth in 1998 called ‘Midnight In The Garden Of East Texas’, which chronicled the tale of the 1996 murder of 81 year-old millionaire Marjorie Nugent by her 39 year-old homosexual companion Bernhardt ‘Bernie’ Tiede. Tiede is in prison, serving a life sentence.
Although the film plot sounds bizarre enough, after researching into the ‘true story’ I understand why they changed it up. This sounds right up Black’s alley and he’ll no doubt give an hilarious performance.
