The Dark Knight Rises Rated At PG-13 In The US

The biggest film of the summer has been rated by the Motion Picture Association of America PG-13 for “intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language.”

This would indicate that we on this side of the pond will see a film rated 12A; this does raise questions over THE HUNGER GAMES (2012) struggles to get that same certificate, particularly as the violence and general mood of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES trailer is such that an R-rating in America and 15 rating here would not be a surprise.  THE HUNGER GAMES distributor LIONSGATE FILMS were vehement in their want of a 12A certificate and even voluntarily cut the film to achieve this – minor blood splats nothing else – edits vindicated by the Box-Office haul thus far and the difference in takings between these two certificates is huge; the highest grossing R-Rated film in history is THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004) with a sum of $370 million, whilst the largest amount for a PG-13 film is $760 million for AVATAR (2009), and will undoubtedly have played a part in Christopher Nolan’s editing process.

As if they weren’t already other film-makers will be quaking in their boots at this, admittedly not surprising, news as it will mean a colossal summer for Bale, Hardy and co.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is released in theatres 20th July 2012

Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
