With under 3 months until everyone’s favourite web-slinger returns to the big-screen, Director Marc Webb (500 DAYS OF SUMMER) was recently interviewed about the film, its stars and being involved in a reboot so soon after Sam Raimi’s trilogy. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has a lot to live up to and we’re hoping at THN that it’s a meaty reboot with a lot more depth than the finale of Raimi’s involvement, which fell flat and empty. However, read what Webb had to say about his work and actors:
On Andrew Garfield’s casting:
…there was this humor that he had and that he can do, and there was this emotional weight that he can do, but there’s also a physical capability that he can do…I think that there’s the language of the script, which is words, often in dialogues. And then there’s the behavior that those words have to emerge from. And he’s a master of understanding of what’s going on underneath the surface.
On Emma Stone and the two leads chemistry:
…she’s very funny and really quick and snappy. I remember the first time we screen tested them…it took a minute for him to get back up to speed with her because she was so funny. And then they really brought out really great parts of the other’s performance.
On bringing the embodiment of the comics to the screen:
…something that’s funny and whimsical, but also has real emotional stakes. That’s the real tricky part is to make it all feel grounded even though…he’s swinging through the streets and he can do things that no other human can do. But still give him a hard time when he’s relating to his aunt or his girlfriend…I think reconciling those two universes was tricky, but I think that people really react to it.
On trying to steer away from Raimi’s films:
I just wanted the movie to function on its own, in its own right. You don’t have to have seen those other movies. It’s very different. We just wanted to create a universe that functions on its own. It doesn’t have too much to do with the other one.
The footage and trailers we’ve seen in the run up to the release have us salivating and reading what Marc Webb has to say we’re convinced that this is going to be brilliant and could even steal summer. Don’t believe us? Watch the most recent international trailer below.
Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans and Martin Sheen THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will be crawling its way into theatres 3rd July

Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
