Winding-Refn To Produce ‘Maniac Cop’ Remake!

Director William Lusig’s 80s exploitation classic MANIAC COP has been rumoured for a remake for sometime now. Well now word has come from the films original scripter, Larry Cohen, that both he and Lustig will co-produce the upcoming remake alongside DRIVE and BRONSON director Nicolas Winding-Refn.

The original film, starring cult favourites Bruce Campbell, Tom Atkins and Robert D’ Zar, told the story of Officer Matt Cordell, a disfigured New York cop on a murderous rampage throughout the iconic city’s sleazy streets. MANIAC COP also spawned two sequels.

Talking to Daily Grinidhouse, Cohen commented:-

It’s going to be more a prequel than anything else, I am really excited to come back to this world especially since Nick is going to be a part of it. Nick (Winding Refn) has been talking to us about it for a while now and I had an idea that would work so we’re going to do it, with a bigger budget than the others have had.

William Lustig remains apprehensive, saying:-

The project isn’t 100% signed off on but it’s pretty close.

The first two films really were guilty pleasures with a great cast. Knowing Lustig and Winding-Refn’s graphic brutal depiction of violence, this new remake/prequel is sure have more that its fair share. There is currently no director or stars attached but THN will bring you confirmation as soon as we hear.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
