You’ve probably heard the news, AVENGERS ASSEMBLE has achieved the biggest amount of US dollars banked over an opening weekend… ever. A collossal $200 million dollars plus is expected to be announced on Monday afternoon when the official figures are available, but today’s estimations are pointing at a massive, record-breaking take for an amazing film. The question on everyone’s lips is, just how is Hollywood going to react?
As you may or may not know, Hollywood feeds off of trends, and for every successful movie that beats the shit out of the box-office, there’s a below par carbon copy that follows. With this massive haul for the OCEAN’S ELEVEN of superhero movies, and said superhero movies in general, perhaps peaking with AVENGERS, what will Hollywood do next to try and duplicate success and bring in as much cash before the bubble bursts? More superhero movies than ever before? Perhaps, but over the past few hours since the news broke of the massive success of Marvel and Disney’s first collaboration, my mind started to wander.
Chris Nolan is wrapping his BATMAN trilogy this summer with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Next summer sees the release of MAN OF STEEL, Zack Snyder’s in-production Superman movie, which by the way, Nolan also produces. Warner Brothers will want to make a success of that movie for future sequels, but will they now start to think about a possible crossover movie in the DC universe? How about that often rumoured Justice League Of America movie? You know, the comic book series that featured Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter. Okay, so GREEN LANTERN was not that great, and the other characters don’t have stand alone movies as yet, but surely there are possiblities here now. The WB must be starting to see dollar signs… even if they look to launch individual properties for a future super movie.
I don’t follow comic books at all, and there are other writers on the site that can chime in with their thoughts and give better opinion on said comics than I ever could, but from a purely business point of view, should the WB be looking at this now more than ever before? Or could we get that Superman and Batman movie at least? It seemed silly and unreachable before, but now, now after this mammoth success in the Marvel universe, a JLA movie or similar crossover could happen. Post TDKR and MOS, could this be the time?
Discuss.
