Burton And Grahame-Smith Give ‘Beetlejuice 2’ Update

Tim Burton’s loveable-but-mischievous ghost BEETLEJUICE, so memorably played by the great Michael Keaton, has long been rumoured for the remake/prequel/sequel treatment. Late last year, after collaborating with Burton on forthcoming film projects, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER and DARK SHADOWS, Seth Grahame-Smith confirmed he was working on a follow-up script to the 1988 cult, Gothic favourite.

Now both Grahame-Smith and Burton have gave a few hints while promoting their Johnny Depp-starring DARK SHADOWS, at just what stage the project is currently at.

Burton commented:-

Seth is writing something, I just told him because I liked the character, I just thought I’d have a better response if he has ideas about it to just let him work on it. If it’s interesting. I don’t know if I’d ever know a good script if it bit me in the face, but I know what I like.

When pressed if the likes of Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin and Winona Ryder will return, Grahame- Smith states:-

It’s all possible. In terms of the story, however many years that are between the two films will be the amount of years that are between the two storylines. It’s not a reboot or a remake, it’s a straight sequel with Michael Keaton returning as Beetlejuice.

I’ve met with Michael Keaton about it, I’ve met with Tim about it. Warner Brothers is obviously eager. But right now the ball is in my court to crack the story that will make it worth doing this again. I don’t want to have to look fans in the face and apologise for making a bad ‘Beetlejuice’ movie. And I don’t want to make anything just because I can.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
