Cruiser For Magnificent Remake?

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN is the latest classic to be dragged ungraciously through the remake rumour mill, with MGM reportedly set to give the 1960 film a 21st Century makeover. Whilst cinemagoers may grumble – it seems as if Hollywood is unable to come up with original ways to scratch its own arse, let alone make a movie – let’s not count this one out just yet.

MGM have a few big-nae remakes currently on the slate, some of which could prove very interesting: with talented director José Padilha and breakout-star-of-the-moment Chloe Moretz attached to ROBOCOP and CARRIE respectively, the studio has at least the decency to try and make something of these projects (unlike a certain director/producer who seems intent of defecating over every horror property available, then using a few dollar bills from his millions to wipe his arse with – mentioning no names, Michael Bay, you rotten shit).

This time around, Tom Cruise is reportedly attached to lead THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. And whilst his insufferable smug cheese face may be a point of contention for many, the Cruiser has earned his status as the world’s biggest movie star – even in crapfests like WAR OF THE WORLDS he turns in fine, charismatic performances. THN has little choice but to begrudgingly respect the man.

It is, of course, all hearsay right now. There’s currently no writer or director on board, and it could be a long while before this project makes it to the big screen. And Cruise has plenty else on the cards right now – OBLIVION, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, and TOP GUN 2 (probably) – so don’t anybody hold their breath right now lest they suffocate.

If it happens however, it will be interesting to see who else joins the cast. As the title very clearly states, there are SEVEN magnificent heroes, not just one. The original film featured Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz as the gunslingers charged with defending a Mexican town from some dastardly bandidos.

The original film itself was a remake of Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI – somewhat appropriate as you may remember Tom Cruise was in fact the last samurai, in patronising shitfest, erm… THE LAST SAMURAI.

Perhaps be could bring last samurais two-seven along to co-star.
