Tom Cruise Gets Exclusive Screening Of Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’

Tom Cruise being who he is (and being probably the most famous Scientologist in the celebrity world) has its perks and reports are surfacing that he’s had an exclusive look at Paul Thomas Anderson’s (THERE WILL BE BLOOD) upcoming drama THE MASTER, which is loosely based around the religion.

Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as Lancaster Dodd, a man who sets up a religious group shortly after the end of World War II. Dodd befriends drifter Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), but as their group gains momentum Quell starts to challenge his new beliefs. The plot loosely reflects the story of L. Ron Hubbard who founded Scientology, just after the War. Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Ambyr Childers, Jesse Plemons, Lena Endre, Rami Malek and David Warshofsky also star alongside Hoffman and Phoenix.

Anderson reportedly showed Cruise the ‘first draft’ – and although his representatives declined to speak to the press, two sources close to the production said that Cruise wasn’t impressed and wanted Anderson to change some parts. Maybe it’s a little too controversial or truthful for Cruise’s taste? We’ll have to wait to see it ourselves. In the meantime, check out a clip from the film (below).

THE MASTER, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is due for release 12th October, 2012.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
