One Shot, Starring Tom Cruise, Becomes ‘Jack Reacher’

The Christopher McQuarrie adaptation of Lee Child’s ONE SHOT novel has seen its name changed to simply JACK REACHER, based upon the character that Tom Cruise plays in the epic. The film shared the title of the novel up until now, but according to sources, that has been changed as of this week.

Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo and Werner Herzog also star.

Here’s the source material’s synopsis:

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot.

Interesting that writer/director McQuarrie cast Cruise in the title role of Reacher, described as ‘a giant, standing at 6′ 5″ tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg).’ I close my eyes, and yes, I picture Tom Cruise. Right? Good grief.

Expect this to be the first in a series of Reacher films as there are none other than 17 novels featuring the character.

Cruise is so WRONG for this – one of my favorite fictional characters, no way I’m catching this film.
