Misfits Director For Monsters 2?

MONSTERS was one of last year’s greatest secrets – from director Gareth Edwards, the movie followed a young couple trying to make their way across an alien-infested Mexico and to safety on US home soil. Far removed from your conventional creature feature, MONSTERS was a visual masterpiece, and boasted a fine script with the kind of three-dimensional characters often absent from movies about 60-foot squid beasts.

Talk of a sequel was inevitable, and a number of directors have been wrung through the rumour mill over the last year. Edwards has opted out after enlisting on the upcoming GODZILLA reboot (yay for that, says THN), leaving it wide open for a new aspiring talent to park his bot in the director’s chair. The latest name to be attached to the project may prove the most exciting yet – British TV director Tom Green. Having made his name on popular television drama MISFITS, Green is already becoming a fanboy favourite, and could prove a very interesting choice for the MONSTERS sequel, also known as THE DARK CONTINENT.

As a TV director, Green will be hopefully recognise the importance of character, story, and thematic substance – all the things that made the first film so brilliant. Indeed, if Gareth Edwards accomplished anything, it was to demonstrate that monster movies don’t need to be all about the monsters.
