Since he left DOCTOR WHO in 2010, David Tennant hasn’t had to worry too much about the dangers of typecasting. He’s had the chance to portray all manner of diverse and interesting roles since leaving the role of the Time Lord behind, whether it’s a Russell Bland/David Blaine hybrid in FRIGHT NIGHT, Manchester United coach Jimmy Murphy in UNITED, or even Charles Darwin in PIRATES IN AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS. Too right as well, he’s too good an actor to be typecast.
Tennant’s latest project looks set to be another interesting one, as the actor has apparently signed up for ITV’s latest gritty Cop Drama BROADCHURCH, which is rumoured to have a budget of a cool £1 Million, and is, according to sources, inspired greatly by the hit Danish Crime Drama THE KILLING.
A source said: ‘This is not just another detective show with a quirky sleuth. There is more to it. It will be in the same vein as THE KILLING in that it will be suspenseful — just when you think you know what’s going on, David’s character will turn the whole thing on its head. It’s a challenging role but one he is relishing.’
No matter how original it actually is (ITV do have plenty of previous form for lacking originality), the idea of David Tennant as a gritty cop solving murders is a really exciting one. We here at THN are intrigued – how’s about you folks?
BROADCHURCH is written by Chris Chibnall (TORCHWOOD, LAW & ORDER UK, UNITED), produced by Richard Stokes (TORCHWOOD, LAW & ORDER UK), and directed by James Strong (DOCTOR WHO, LAW & ORDER UK, TORCHWOOD, UNITED). Expect to see the eight part Drama sometime in January 2013.
