Any fans of EA’s NEED FOR SPEED game – this will be music to your ears! DreamWorks Studios have officially declared that they are backing a Scott Waugh-directed production of a film adaptation of the game, due to be released in 2014. We know it’s a long way off, but confirmation news is exciting enough.
Production brothers George and John Gatins (who have worked on SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE and REAL STEEL, respectively) have written an original story based around the ideas of the game, so as not to base it solely on one individual game in the franchise. DreamWorks Chairman, Mr Steven Spielberg, has said that he’s ‘excited’ about working with the brothers and that it’s a ‘big piece of business for DreamWorks’. Other members of the team, including Stacey Snider (CEO and co-Chair of DreamWorks), Frank Gibeau (President of EA Labels), Patrick Soderlund (Executive Vice President, EA Games Label) and Pat O’Brien (Vice President of EA Entertainment) have said that George and John’s story is ‘compelling’, it’s ‘going to make a fun, cool movie franchise’ and that DreamWorks is ‘a great home for the NEED FOR SPEED franchise’.
The game itself is one of EA’s biggest selling titles. Since its initial first release, the title has sold over 140 million copies worldwide and made roughly $4 billion. If as many people who bought the game buy a ticket and see the film, DreamWorks could be a lot better off by the end of 2014!
NEED FOR SPEED, directed by Scott Waugh, is currently in early pre-production. It’s due to start production early next year with a predicted release date of 2014.
