Will Nolan Return For Another Bat Sequel?

Christopher Nolan’s decision to set Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego in the real world, has now set a benchmark for all other human superhero movies to follow suit. The ‘hyper-realism’ approach could potentially lend comic-book films and characters more credibility, and movies such as THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, show just how much influence Nolan’s franchise has had on the genre.

As huge fans of Nolan’s Batman films, THN would like nothing more than to see the director continue until the end of time. Having said that, we all know good things must come to an end, otherwise you could be left with George Lucas-like nightmares and crushed memories. Producer Emma Thomas (and wife Nolan) has been talking about the upcoming Batman three-quel, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and the chances of Nolan returning to Gotham City.

I cannot imagine a world in which he would ever want to come back. At a certain point it’s fun to go off and do something different, you know. We’ve spent almost 10 years of our lives making Batman films. He was very excited about this film, and the story that he’d come up with, but I just cannot imagine that he would get that excited about another version of the same thing. The great thing about a trilogy is that it feels like you’ve got a beginning, a middle, and an end. It’s like an extended version of a regular film. Once you get into a fourth film then it’s just episodic, and I just can’t see him getting excited about making another film where basically you’re just wheeling in different villains.

We always knew it was a long shot, especially with Christian Bale confirming he’s also done with the franchise. Another reboot of the series is expected in the future, with Nolan also expected to act as producer. He is currently overseeing another fresh take on Superman, with Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL due next year.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES explodes in to cinemas 20th July.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
