First Alex Cross Trailer

The first trailer has just been released for ALEX CROSS, the latest movie featuring the FBI profiler. If you were slightly confused as to how young Morgan Freeman is looking these days, that’s because he has been replaced by writer, director, cross dressing, box office dynamite Tyler Perry. Freeman played Cross in KISS THE GIRLS  (1997) and ALONG CAME A SPIDER (2001), based on the novels by James Patterson.

This time we get Alex Cross in his younger days – new wife, new job, but the same old sickos trying to ruin his day. He goes up against ex-military man Picasso, played by LOST’s Matthew Fox, looking especially creepy. Judging by his character’s name I’m guessing he cuts up his victims pretty badly. Rob Cohen, director of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS (2001) and XXX (2002) takes control. Paired with the visuals in the trailer, I am expecting more action than Cross’ previous adventures.

KISS THE GIRLS and ALONG CAME A SPIDER weren’t exactly classics, and part of me thinks they were mostly to capitalise on the success of SE7EN (1995). Tyler Perry seemed like such a bizarre choice for the role of Alex Cross. He may be incredibly successful, but the audience for his films are mostly very Christian. How will his loyal fans feel about him in a serial-killer film? Perry also has a large number of critics and haters. His films tend to debut at number 1 at the box office, but they are often critical flops.

I was surprised by how easily Perry seemed to inhabit the role of Cross. However, there are a number of warning signs that kept me from getting excited. The PG-13 rating isn’t what you’d expect from a serial killer/FBI manhunt movie. But the biggest turn off is the terrible, stupid, groan worthy tagline ‘Don’t Ever Cross Alex Cross’. Seriously?

ALEX CROSS is released on 30th November 2012. It stars Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Edward Burns, John C. McGinley, Jean Reno and Cicely Tyson.
