Will Viggo Mortensen Board The Last Voyage Of The Demeter?

THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER has been a long-gestating project with 30 DAYS OF NIGHT director David Slade previously attached but…now has Neil Marshall at the helm. The film will depict the bloodthirsty events that occurred on board the ship that sailed from Transylvania to Whitby, in Bram Stoker’s iconic vampire novel Dracula. Marshall has a terrific track record in horror, one that has ace werewolf thriller DOG SOLDIERS and the claustrophobic nerve-shredder THE DESCENT.

Jude Law had been first choice as male lead for Slade, but Marshall now has offered the brilliant Viggo Mortensen the role. Both Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley (playing the Captain of the ship) are at this stage, still set to appear after signing up when the project was first announced. Hopefully a deal can be reached and with the film in pre-production, shooting can be scheduled around Mortensen’s EASTERN PROMISES sequel.

Marshall has recently directed an acclaimed episode of the epic GAME OF THRONES, and quite bizarrely missed out on directing Robert Rodriguez-produced PREDATORS to VACANCY’s Nimrod Antal. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
