It’s all hearsay and rumours surrounding the mystery Marvel movie scheduled for 2014, but the latest rumour is hinting at GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY to make the leap to the big screen. This may sound confusing to new comers, so let me try and explain. After the success of THE AVENGERS, Marvel announced their next string of films including IRON MAN 3, THOR 2, and CAPTAIN AMERICA 2, including their release dates; however, Marvel had also pencilled in a 16th May 2014 release date for an as yet unnamed feature.
Rumours have been pouring in all over the internet, with the favourite being BLACK PANTHER. This morning we received word that Edgar Wright had started some test shots of ANT-MAN. DOCTOR STRANGE is the other hotly tipped project. Although these three projects are in-development, none have been given a specific release date. DOCTOR STRANGE and ANT-MAN have been in development for years.
The latest rumour thanks to Latino Review, is that this date is set aside for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Here’s a property even I haven’t heard of, but it involves a team of super-heroes protecting the galaxy. Space-cops? This sounds awfully similar to GREEN LANTERN, which was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. Would Marvel really risk going for a Science-Fiction space epic after that bomb?
Latino Review are claiming that a certain someone revealed in the end credits of THE AVENGERS will be the villain and this will all lead into THE AVENGERS 2. So we’d have two superhero teams working together at this point? This all seems rather ambitious and very chaotic. On the other hand, the Guardians have made an appearance in the cartoon series AVENGERS: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES, so it does seem that Marvel and Disney are pushing them into the limelight. They also have a member called Rocket Raccoon, and I would love to see a CGI gun toting raccoon alongside Iron Man at some point in time.
It’s also rumoured that Marvel will announce the film’s identity on 14th July at 6pm, during this year’s Comic-Con in Hall H. Marvel are staying tight lipped about all of this, and rightly so. Each possibility is just as exciting as the last; we haven’t even begun to discuss a THE INCREDIBLE HULK sequel starring Mark Ruffalo. I guess we’ll know soon enough, but until then, these rumours will keep talk of Marvel projects alive throughout the release of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.
Whatever film it is, it will be released 16th May 2014.
