Hello Boys – I’m Back! Dean Devlin Talks Independence Day 2!

It’s been a long time since director-writer combo Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin ruled blockbuster season. These days, the summer months belong to spandex-clad do-gooders, but the duo are all set to make large-scale catastrophes fashionable again with the long-awaited INDEPENDENCE DAY 2. Talk of the project has circulated for years but it seems all systems may finally be go, as Devlin revealed in an interview with THR.

‘Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we’re every excited about the idea of doing it. Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that’s gonna be challenging. But creatively, for the very first time since we did the original, I feel we have a worthy concept, a worthy path to go.

We resisted doing the sequel for years because we still wanted to honor the first one. The first one gave us all careers, and we really love that movie and loved the experience. We didn’t want to make a movie because it was financially a good idea, we only wanted to do it when we had an idea and a concept that creatively felt like it honored the first one – that it felt like an organic sequel as opposed to “let’s just go make some more money”

It took a long time, but I feel like we finally got something that really feels like, “that’s worth seeing as a sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY“‘

We can only imagine they’ve spent the last 16 years trying to think up imaginative ways to blow things up – Semtex up the noses of the Mount Rushmore presidents perhaps, or a giant firecracker up the Statue of Liberty’s arse. That kind of thing.

At this stage, absolutely nothing is know about the project’s details, but fans will surely be hoping to see the return of Will Smith (it is the Willenium, after all), Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman (the GREATEST movie president ever – accept no substitutes).

It may have been 16 years, but THN is psyched at the prospect of INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 – even the superheroes may not be able to stop this one.
