Director & Star Confirmed For Janis Joplin Biopic

A big-screen biopic of singer/songwriter Janis Joplin has been rumoured for a number of years now. NEW GIRL stunner Zooey Dechannel even prepared for three years in perfecting the late singer’s unique voice before her project collapsed. Now we understand that a film entitled JOPLIN has been confirmed, with director Sean Durkin at the helm.

Durkin’s debut MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE was an intense masterpiece – portraying a fascinating struggle for Elizabeth Olsen’s conflicted character – and has made him a director to watch. If your expecting him to reunite with Olsen on JOPLIN, you will be sadly mistaken and there is no place for the adorable Deschanel either. The role has gone to Tony Award-winning stage star Nina Arianda, who will make her lead debut with the portrayal of Joplin.

Joplin, whose career included legendary hits ‘Piece Of My Heart’, ‘To Love Somebody’ and ‘Mercedes Benz’, was found dead in a hotel room in 1970 due to a heroin overdose. She was 27 years-old.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
