‘Elysium’ Viral Kickstarts With A Citizenship Initiative

Neill Blomkamp has been working away on ELYSIUM for a while now and it’s a project that really intrigues us, especially as his first major effort – DISTRICT 9 – inventively turned the sci-fi/alien genre on its head. ELYSIUM is set in 2159, when the rich live on a space station and the rest… have been forced to stay on a ruined Earth. This is where (we’d assume) Matt Damon’s character Max comes in as he goes on a mission to bring equality to the separate worlds.

Ever since THE DARK KNIGHT viral campaign of 2008, I’ve personally had a bit of a film-related addiction to viral campaigns and the search for an interesting one. PROMETHEUS touched on such exploration but was more of an expansion of the world Ridley Scott had created, ELYSIUM has a few more things up its sleeve and started last year when Armadyne.net was launched. If we jump forward to now and more specifically Comic-Con, Sony’s booths have kicked off the campaign again, with a creepy-looking automated ‘Elysium border checkpoint’ man. Their booths have led us to itsbetterupthere.com and now we’re encouraged to ‘like’ it, so we can register for future details plus become a part of their future-thinking ‘Citizenship Initiative‘.

I’d say ‘Get involved!’ and go explore, especially as I’ve been told that I have 3,700 hours remaining until the next stage. If you’ve also got a few spare moments – which I’m sure you have – scroll down for some images direct from Comic-Con, thanks to ComingSoon:

3,695 hours…

ELYSIUM also stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner and opens in the UK on March 1st 2013.

Dan loves writing, film, music and photography. Originally from Devon, he did London for 4 years and now resides in Exeter. He also has a mild obsession with squirrels and cake. The latter being more of a hobby. Favourite movies include HIGH FIDELITY, ALMOST FAMOUS, ROXANNE, GOOD WILL HUNTING, JURASSIC PARK, too many Steve Martin films and Nolan's BATMAN universe.
