Ninja Turtles Creator Defends Bay

If, like myself, you grew up with the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, then recent talk has been nothing but disappointment. Now simply titled NINJA TURTLES, our green mutant buddies are no longer mutants, but aliens instead. That’s right, there is a planet of turtles out there. The villains this time around will be Krang, Rocksteady and Beebop.

The turtles’ creator Kevin Eastman hyped up the film to a ridiculous degree with the following comments:

‘From what I’ve seen, it’s easily the best ‘Turtle’ movie yet. We’re talking RAID: REDEMPTION-style fight scenes; we’re talking about epic RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES sort of effects.’

First of all, calling this film the best ‘Turtle’ movie yet is damning with faint praise. Second, I highly doubt a PG-13 film is going to have the gritty and raw violence that THE RAID had. And lastly, it sounds as if the film is well into production, which I somehow doubt. Choreographed fights? Special effects? This sounds more like a recount of the promises the studios have made to Eastman.

Eastman then goes on to defend Michael Bay and his decision to make the turtles aliens:

‘I know that Michael [Bay] and his group really like that and that Paramount was supportive of that, so I think that it’s great. I grew up reading ‘Captain America’ and ‘The Avengers’ and all that stuff, and over the course of the comic book history, since ‘Avengers’ has been around, how many times has it been reinvented, reformatted, restructured, replatformed?’

I kind of feel that Eastman is missing the point here. This isn’t a simple change in origin, it changes who they are. They are mutants.  I have no doubt that the film could be a success, but it’s going to take a lot more than just the creator’s word to relinquish my fears.

His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.

Ok. I don’t want to buy into the fact the Ninja turtles are from another planet. They are as American as Ninjas can get with their characters being the base of Pizza loving surfer dudes! I can see rocksteady and beebop and orang coming from different planets but take out the mutant part and you just have some aliens that are somwhat cool. Where is the USA spirit behind this much the less why would they bother fighting for earth?

Even if you would buy into it, I agree that it’s still rubbish and actually, quite an interesting point.

Who the bloody hell are they going to be fighting ‘for’?!
