While THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is still in cinemas, plans are reported to be well underway for the sequels. We already know that the second film is scheduled for a May 2014 release, while a third film will follow that – but now Marc Webb’s position as director has been cast into doubt for more Spidey goodness.
Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad told The Hollywood Reporter that while the studio would like Webb to return, there are ‘obstacles’ in the way. Namely, the fact that he owes another film to 20th Century Fox. With THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 already greenlit for 2014, filming must begin next year with or without Webb – so if Fox call him in, Columbia will be looking for a replacement.
While the previous SPIDER-MAN trilogy was directed by one man – Sam Raimi – the state of the superhero blockbuster has changed. Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT trilogy is obviously the exception but it seems the main concern of the studio is to get the film out there – regardless of director.
So this sets tongues wagging, who will replace Webb? One of the pros of his direction is the human touch he gave Spidey, (no doubt based on his one previous film credit, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER) but when it came to action, things took a turn for the worse. We’re thinking maybe a new director would be a welcome change of pace?
As I type, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has grossed $210 million since release – which, by today’s standards, is only seen as moderate. Who would you like to see replace Webb for instalment number two? Or would you rather see him continue the franchise? Let us know in the juciy comments section below.
