Real-Life War Tale ‘Lone Survivor’ Casts Lead Roles

Peter Berg’s follow-up to big budget turkey BATTLESHIP looks set to be an altogether more real epic. Set in 2005, LONE SURVIVOR will depict the events of a crack team of Navy SEALs (led by the soldier-turned-author Marcus Luttrell) who are ambushed while on a top secret mission in Afghanistan. The action-thriller, based on the book, will document their grueling survival efforts while in Taliban territory.

Joining the already impressive cast of Mark Wahlberg (expected to play Luttrell), Ben Foster and Taylor Kitsch, will be Emile Hirsch. The young actor was last seen in William Friedkin’s superb twisted thriller KILLER JOE, which did wonders to bring him back from the brink after the shitfest that was THE DARKEST HOUR. Soon, he’ll also be seen alongside his new co-star Kitsch (and Berg’s BATTLESHIP lead) in Oliver Stone’s thriller SAVAGES.

I’m not too familiar with Luttrell’s novel but the title may be a bit of a spoiler, considering he wrote the story. I’m suspecting Foster, Kitsch and Hirsh will play the cannon fodder and will be offed during the last third, as Wahlberg takes the mantel of an American war hero. These four actors usually give a good account of themselves but if the eye-rolling, sugar-coated patriotism is anywhere close to BATTLESHIP, it could just plain rubbish. I guess we’ll find out!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Who wrote this article? Did you even do your research? Obviously not as it’s not a “story” he wrote. What kind of idiot refers to heroes (one amongst them a congressional medal of honor winner) as cannon fodder. These men died protecting your freedom to write as you please but please use some common sense and respect.
