It’s been a relatively disappointing summer blockbuster season – even unsinkable THE DARK KNIGHT RISES failed to live up to the standards of its predecessors (a high benchmark, admittedly). And at this stage, can anyone really muster up enthusiasm for Len Wiseman’s TOTAL RECALL remake? The original is, after all, an absolute classic. Not only is it Arnie’s best ever movie, it also comes from taul Verhoeven’s ultra-violent and sweary heyday.
However, let’s put that (and Len Wiseman’s track record) aside and assume that Sony Pictures has something special up its proverbial sleeve. Firstly, the production has the guts to relocate the story, substituting Mars for Earth-based, suggesting we can expect something different (surely what all remakes should strive for); and secondly, there’s a solid cast, most notably Colin Farrell as Doug Quaid and Bryan Cranston on villain duties.
Could TOTAL RECALL be the sleeper hit of the summer season?
