Word on the street is that Warner Bros are considering Ben Affleck to direct their superhero mash-up JUSTICE LEAGUE. Christopher Nolan has finished his Bat-franchise and with no more Harry Potter either, Warner Bros. are in desperate need of a franchise. JUSTICE LEAGUE is DC’s very own THE AVENGERS and we all know successful that was. While Marvel have gradually built up to their ultimate summer blockbuster, DC have been left straggling behind by only showing faith in their two big names Batman and Superman.
Affleck has proven himself twice as a director with the astonishing GONE BABY GONE (2007) and his critically acclaimed THE TOWN (2010). This year sees the release of ARGO, a true story based on a fake film crew trying to extract American citizens from a war zone. Both THE TOWN and ARGO were made at Warner Bros so Affleck certainly seems to have a good relationship with them.
However, some sites seriously doubt the claims first made by Variety! And who can blame them? For every big production we always get a long list of names and it only makes sense that Warner Bros will want to talk to a number of people and where better to start than their own backyard? True or not, Affleck is an exciting choice. judging by his previous films he would bring a serious edge that would certainly set it apart from THE AVENGERS.
Personally I don’t want to see a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie and I say that as someone drinking from a Justice League mug and wearing a GREEN LANTERN power ring at this very moment. DC simply have too much to do and it seems as though they are rushing just because of THE AVENGERS success. They will need to reestablish Batman in a different continuity, decide if they are going to continue with Reynolds as Green Lantern or not, make a decision as to whether or not MAN OF STEEL will figure into this continuity, and on top of that they still don’t seem to be able to launch characters such as The Flash and Wonder Woman.
If Warner Bros. truly want to head for a JUSTICE LEAGUE film, then they need to have a long term plan.
