INDIANA JONES V may not be looking likely, but the originals are heading back to the screen in a new IMAX format. Steven Spielberg has also been talking about testing out some IMAX cameras and 3D for his next film ROBOPOCALYPSE. Talking to the NY Times, Spielberg said:
This was Greg Foster’s idea, actually – he’s the head of Imax [Film] and it was his idea to give RAIDERS [OF THE LOST ARK] an interesting launching point before the Blu-ray hits the streets, to come out in all 275 of Imax’s North American theaters. I remember the days when we used to go to the Cinerama Dome or the Ziegfeld in New York, to see the 70mm exclusive engagements. When I first started watching RAIDERS on the big Imax screen not too long ago, it reminded me of those old event-ized days.
Talking to Yahoo! Spielberg discussed the possibility of using IMAX cameras to film ROBOPOCALYPSE:
I’m going to do an IMAX camera test, [both] a 2 and 3D testfor my next movie ROBOPOCALYPSE and I haven’t decided whether I’m going to use the IMAX cameras, and I haven’t decided whether it’s going to be 2D or 3D yet, but I am in September going to start doing some tests.
It’s good to hear that Mr. Spielberg is going to test these tools before committing to them. It will make sure he feels comfortable with them. I’m never really impressed with the talk of IMAX or 3D as I’m still a sucker for a good story, without that the film could smell of waffles and I still wouldn’t be impressed. But if it can enhance a great tale, or just add some spectacle to proceedings then that can’t be too bad.
ROBOPOCALYPSE is set for release 25th April 2014.
