‘The Rocketeer’ Reboot Is Set To Take Flight!

A remake, reboot, reimagining or whatever they are called these days, is said to be in the works at Disney for Joe Johnston’s cult classic THE ROCKETEER. It makes sense to take another crack at adapting Dave Stevens’ 1982 comic-book homage to the old Saturday matinee adventures, especially with superhero flicks now bigger that ever. Johnston’s film was a disastrous and expensive failure on it’s initial release in 1991, but has since gone on the become a firm fan favourite.

THE ROCKETEER was set during the 1930s with stunt pilot Cliff Secord who discovers a futuristic jet pack that allows him to fly, brining him to the attention of the Nazis. A then unknown Billy Campbell took the lead opposite Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Paul Sorvino and dashing villain Timothy Dalton. Johnston’s retro production design from this movie was more than evident in his Marvel origin tale CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, released last year. Currently, there are no directors or stars attached to the new project, which is in the very early stages and not necessarily guaranteed to get off the ground.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
