Robocop Reboot/Remake Riles (di)Rector

Director Jose Padilha is said to be in ‘Hell’ as he tries his best to remake 80s action classic ROBOCOP.

The production has seen its share of difficulties; languishing in Development Hell for years, having directors come and go and recently losing the most intriguing ingredient cast member, Hugh Laurie. And its an open secret that the script is a pile of Robo Plops.

Now it’s come to light that director Padilha is having a rough old time making the film, which is hardly surprising. Portuguese film site Cinemacom Rapadura recently interviewed Fernando Meirelles, director of THE CONSTANT GARDENER, CITY OF GOD and the recent 360. He’s also good mates with Padhila and had this to say;

‘I talked to José Padilha for a week by phone. He will begin filming Robocop. He is saying that it is the worst experience. For every 10 ideas he has, 9 are cut. Whatever he wants, he has to fight. “This is hell here,” he told me. “The film will be good, but I never suffered so much and do not want to do it again.” He is bitter, but it’s a fighter.’

Poor old José. Still, we must remember that this is not a direct quote, this is second hand from a fellow film maker AND the article is translated from Portuguese, so this is by no means the gospel. Still though, he says it’ll be good, and… y’know… it might be? Let’s just wait and see. But from what we’ve heard so far, when tickets go on sale next August, I’m not sure I’d buy one.

Not even for a dollar.
