Neil Marshall To Take To The Seas With Pirate Series ‘Black Sails’

The very underrated Neil Marshall is set to direct a prequel television series to Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’. Cable network Starz is behind the project, named BLACK SAILS, an eight episode series that will focus on the character of Captain Flint, set two years previous to Stevenson’s famous novel.

THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise has obviously made pirates popular and cool again, despite the last three being torture to sit through. Having said that, with Marshall literally at the helm of this upcoming effort, I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for BLACK SAILS, which should reach our shores in 2014.

Coincidentally, THE DESCENT and DOG SOLDIERS director will soon take charge of another adventure involving an ill-fated ship. THE VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER is currently in pre-production and will chronicle the sea faring journey of Count Dracula’s bloodsucking exploits travelling from Transylvania to England as described in Bram Stoker’s legendary novel. Viggo Mortensen is said to be in talks to headline.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
