In the biggest box-office sensation of next year, IRON MAN 3 (yes I can see into the future), Guy Pearce plays the role of Aldrich Killian. He is a key part in the creation of the Extremis serum and people guessed that with such a high caliber star in the role Killian would play a big part in the film. This doesn’t seem to be the case, as Guy Pearce has described his roles in both IRON MAN 3 and PROMETHEUS, in an interview with Vulture, as “really kind of cameo stuff”. He went on to say:
Based on the first two movies, there’s a great chemistry between Robert [Downey Jr] and Gwyneth [Paltrow], and I just think the films have a fun, joyful sort of quality about them. I’ve just enjoyed them. So I just felt like I wanted to be a part of this.I mean, on some level, it’s tricky because you feel like a bit of an outsider. You don’t really live the experience that you do when you’re there all day every day with everybody. But at the same time, it can be more fun sometimes because you’re just working in concentrated spurts.
He later went on to discuss how he passed on the opportunity to play DAREDEVIL in the 2003 film.
The thing about DAREDEVIL was that it was the role of Daredevil [that I didn’t want to do]. It was ten years ago. I’ve probably loosened up, and I feel a little more experimental in what I’ll take on these days, but I still don’t know that I would want to play the superhero myself, since I’m playing a different kind of character in this film.
IRON MAN 3 will be the first Marvel film released in their Phase 2 following THE AVENGERS. Jon Favreau has handed the director’s chair over to Shane Black, so we can expect a different feel and tone to the previous outings, but not too much. I’m very excited about this film and am glad to hear it will work as a separate affair away from THE AVENGERS. If we have too many nods and references over the next few years it will lessen the impact when they finally get together again. Even in a small role Guy Pearce is bound to be memorable, and it’s nice to hear that such an established star enjoys the smaller roles.
IRON MAN 3, directed by Shane Black, is currently in production. It is due for release from 26th April 2013. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Paul Bettany, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Jon Favreau, and James Badge Dale.
