‘The Hobbit’ 2 & 3 Have Titles And Release Dates

Peter Jackson has finally announced the release dates and titles for his second and third THE HOBBIT films. The trilogy will go as follows:

  • THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY – 14th December 2012
  • THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG – 13th December 2013
  • THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN – 18th July 2014

I’m loving the title of the second film as it hints at our huge dragon friend to be portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. I’m a bit surprised by the summer release date of the third film as all the previous installments will have been at winter, which I think is the perfect time for fantasies such as this.

The real question is whether or not Jackson can successfully expand this story into three parts. There’s a whole universe to explore, but what I loved about THE HOBBIT was its simplicity and how it grew into an epic fantasy with LORD OF THE RINGS. We’ll see how it goes this December.

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY is released 14th December 2012. It stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Elijah Wood, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Aiden Turner, Ian Holm, Billy Connolly, and Lee Pace.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
