Albert Nobbs DVD Review

Director: Rodrigo García

Starring: Glenn Close, Janet McTeer, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson

Running time: 113 minutes

Certificate: 15

ALBERT NOBBS seems to be a passion project for Glenn Close. She first played Albert way back in 1982, when the story was a mere stage play. So, 20 years later, it’s about time Al got his moment to shine.

Set in late 19th century Ireland, Close stars as the quiet and mysterious Nobbs, a hotel waiter who is well-known for taking his job very seriously. However, things with Albert aren’t all that they seem, as after confiding in decorator Hubert (McTeer), Nobbs reveals himself to be a biological woman.

Although you may think I have completely ruined the film for you, hear me out. This detail is uncovered (literally) about 15 minutes into the start, as the rest of the film focuses on Nobbs’ struggle with reality versus disguise. If Close passed you in the street, dressed as her male alter-ego, you would never even guess – she is that believable in the role. Her ability to portray a woman dressed as a man – who wants to reveal his/her true identity – and to not even have to say anything, but be able to show sadness just by the twitch of her eyelids is superb. As Albert, she is serious, professional… and nervous. But a touching scene showing Al as his true self gives Close a chance to truly smile, something you see rarely in the film.

As for the other members of the cast, they come and go. McTeer is brilliant, but doesn’t take the shine off her co-star. Wasikowska and Johnson are either here nor there -–as it’s set in Ireland, of course they’re forcing their accents (and at times it’s very obvious). Their story line – although key – doesn’t really give the same effect or feeling, but well done for trying.

Although, at times, the plot slows down a little, give ALBERT NOBBS a chance. From the very beginning to the bitter end, Close is fantastic, supported by a favourable cast and a heartbreaking narrative. It’s a shame it wasn’t nominated for more awards (ALBERT NOBBS was nominated for three Oscars and three Golden Globes, but didn’t win any).

ALBERT NOBBS is available on DVD 3rd September and can be ordered here

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
