‘Great Expectations’ Clip Isn’t As Good As We Thought It Would Be

I love the old classics of Charles Dickens, especially how many varied interpretations they can produce. A Christmas Carol has given us Muppets, animation, motion-capture, musicals and so on. GREAT EXPECTATIONS is the latest adaptation, and this time it comes from director Mike Newell. He’s assembled an impressive cast to fill out the roles but with the trailers and the clip below, it really doesn’t seem to add anything different to the tale. I’m a sucker for the work of David Lean, but that doesn’t mean you have to match him in quality. Just give me something new. No doubt we’ll see some impressive set and costume design, but will this be the go-to adaptation for students trying to avoid reading the novel itself?

GREAT EXPECTATIONS is released 30th November 2012. It stars Jeremy Irvine, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Holliday Grainger, Robbie Coltrane, Jason Flemyng, Sally Hawkins, David Walliams, and Ewan Bremner.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
