Whedon Discusses Marvel’s Phase 2

Joss Whedon has recently taken to discussion the next phase in Marvel’s domination of the cinematic superhero world. He first talked to 24 Hours about his involvement in those films leading up to THE AVENGERS 2:

Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say ‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this.’ I’m not that.

That’s very encouraging to hear, as I’m sure we all want these separate projects to have their own voice. It will also help to not scare any potential talent away from these films.

Whedon then went on to talk about how he wants to handle THE AVENGERS 2 thematically.

The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.

I’m sure we all expect the sequel to take on a darker tone in some way or another. It’s such a huge project to even consider at this point. Will the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY team-up with The Avengers, will it be set in space, will Thanos be the villain? So many questions and such a lot of time. Luckily for us, the gaps between each cinematic release in Phase 2 are very small.

THE AVENGERS is released on DVD and Blu-ray 17th September. It stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth.
