Guillermo Del Toro has talked about the enforced 3D conversion of his latest sci-fi epic PACIFIC RIM.
We recently reported that the HELLBOY director was opposed to his film being post-converted to 3D, taking a Nolan-esque stand against the three dimensional menace. But alas, Warner Bros weren’t having any of it and with big 3D CG dollar signs in their eyes announced that, against the director’s wishes, PACIFIC RIM would be converted.
However, Del Toro has been assuring us that if it has to happen, it’ll be as good as it can be.
‘What happened was, in the weeks and months following Comic-Con, what I asked from the studio was to agree to… points that I wanted to do. The more the ILM shots arrived, the more I realized that there were only a few shots that would miniaturize. Number one: I asked the studio that we would not hyper-stereo-lise the thing. That we would not force 3D on the beauty shots. That we would keep the giant dimensions. They agreed.”
Essentially when something is made to appear three dimensional, it inherently seems smaller. With the grand scale that Del Toro has achieved, it’s no wonder he didn’t want that tinkered with, and we now know that not all of the feature will be converted. Hopefully the assurances WB have given him will be realised. He continued;
‘Number two, they agreed to something very unusual. Normally a conversion takes a few weeks. I asked to start it immediately so we could take the full 40 weeks to do the conversion. As an example, Titanic took about 50 weeks to convert. The final thing that I asked that they agreed to, which was amazing, was that I asked them to give me an extra budget, which is considerable, to actually have ILM composite the shots that are CG native 3D. We’re not giving elements. ILM is giving the composite in 3D from the get-go. That’s a huge, huge element. Now I’m going to be involved in supervising it. What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I’m not running for office. I can do a Romney.’
It’s hard not to like Guillermo Del Toro, isn’t it?
So he did a Romney and flip-flopped, but unlike Mitt Romney, Del Toro has a proven track record of delivering and if he says that the conversion will be good, we at THN believe him.
PACIFIC RIM stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day and will be released in 3D and (hopefully) 2D on the 12th of July 2013 (that’s two weeks before my birthday. Just sayin’).
