Fans eagerly awaiting the December release of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY can temporarily distract themselves from their countdown with the recent unveiling of the grotesque Goblin King — albeit in toy form.
TheOneRing.net recently got an up-close-and-personal glimpse of the soon-to-be-released action figure, which is packaged in a “battle set” with the mighty dwarf Thorin Oakenshield (portrayed by Richard Armitage in the film). More than two times the size of Thorin, the Goblin King appears to live up to its reputation as one of author J.R.R. Tolkien’s vilest Middle Earth creations. As the description on the box states: “One of the biggest and baddest creatures from THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY faces off with a key hero in this 3.75″ scale action figure battle pack. Each figure replicates the facial features, clothing, weapons and accessories of the character in authentic detail.”
It looks like fans can rest assured that, once again, director Peter Jackson went to great lengths to loyally recreate Tolkien’s characters for the big screen.
For those who haven’t read Tolkien’s 1937 novel, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his 13 dwarf companions encounter the fearsome Goblin King when they are captured in a cave early on in their expedition.
THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX on December 14th, 2012. The film stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis.
