Paul Attanasio To Rewrite ‘Scarface’ Remake

If you lean in closely I’ll whisper a little secret to you…a little closer…I have never seen SCARFACE (1983). Which is odd since I used to own it on VHS. It’s just one of those films that I was never in the mood for, and when I was in the mood for an adult crime movie, I would stick on THE GODFATHER (1972). Well I don’t ever need to watch that film now as Hollywood are giving me a modern day remake. Now before any person that has ever been on MTV’s Cribs starts shouting profanities, let’s remember that SCARFACE itself was a remake of SCARFACE (1932).

Like those two films, this isn’t going to be an exact remake, but rather it will handle similar themes to the first two about the attraction and glorification of a life of crime, before pulling the rug from underneath and watching the gradual fall of our antihero. Screenwriter Paul Attansio, who gave us QUIZ SHOW (1994) and DONNIE BRASCO (1997), has been asked by Universal Pictures and producers Marc Shmuger and Martin Bregman to rewrite the script originally penned by David Ayer.

This could be very a very interesting trilogy when compiled together. The same story told in 3 distinct periods of time. With the current economic crisis, perhaps a life in crime does look alluring to many people. We’ll see how this shapes up when a director and stars are attached.
