It’s handbags at dawn ladies. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES cinematographer has labelled rival superhero film THE AVENGERS as appalling. During an interview with Sarasota Herald Tribune, Pfister was simply asked what was important when shooting a movie. For some reason this became an attack on the box-office, critical sensation, and best superhero film of the year:
What’s really important is storytelling. None of it matters if it doesn’t support the story. I thought THE AVENGERS was an appalling film. They’d shoot from some odd angle and I’d think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling.
Interestingly enough the site that ran the interview has since removed Pfister’s comments about THE AVENGERS, but you’ve gotta be quicker than that to outrun the internet. These days people seem to be proud by the fact that “they tell it like it is”. Back in my day we called that being a twat. I’m all for Pfister having his own opinion, but his answer had nothing to do with the original question. To call THE AVENGERS appalling based solely on camera angles is a bit nonsensical, but I suppose the man is a cinematographer.
Still, it didn’t bother us or the majority of the movie going public. So Pfister can suck on his jealous rage as I think Academy Award nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey did an awesome job on THE AVENGERS and perfectly captured the comic book tone. Seamus McGarvey has worked films such as ATONEMENT, THE HOURS, and the underrated directorial effort from Tim Roth THE WAR ZONE. He will also be working on the upcoming GODZILLA film, which makes him extra cool in my book.
Wally Pfister is currently prepping hi directorial debut which he says will be a present day science-fiction film.

Let’s hope YOUR film has the right angles then, matey! 😉 Any shot out of place would be AWFUL.

He DID answer the question whether you like his answer or not. For him, he felt the choices in lighting and camera placement were needlessly flashy (I disagree, but he’s talking from a qualified position). And how is he “jealous” of an Oscar nominated D.P,when he’s already won for Inception? This is a non-story.
