‘Deadpool’ Finally Back On Track?

A ‘Deadpool’ spinoff film has been mooted pretty much since around the release of 2009’s X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. But despite Ryan Reynolds apparently being keen on revisiting the character, a script by ZOMBIELAND scribes Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick being pretty much done and unknown director Tim Miller ready at the wheel, 20th Century Fox seems to have been reluctant to move the film forward. Miller recently commented on the film and had the following to say:

We’ve turned in an amazing script and done some early tests and visual development that I’m confident would get the fans stoked, and Ryan [Reynolds] still loves the project. So it’s really up to Fox as to whether or not the film happens. All I can do is hope (and beg periodically) that it be allowed to move ahead.

That in itself sounds fairly non-committal, but Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld has since chimed in his two cents via twitter:

I assure you, as Deadpool’s daddy that me, Tim Miller and @mrmarkmillar have huddled on all things Deadpool. We will storm the castle!!

The single biggest blockade(blockhead?) is gone. Mr. Tom Rothman has been removed from Fox. Not a friend of Deadpool’s.

I’ve said it again, if the Deadpool test footage was seen, leaked, the Internet would freak and riots would ensue. Bloody PERFECT.

Now, on paper, that makes it sound like the project might’ve picked up some steam again, but until an official announcement, I’m going to put this in the ‘doubtful’ pile. I’ve learned not to take anything like this for granted practically until shooting begins (and looking at WORLD WAR Z, even that seems to not guarantee anything). I hope it happens, and that they can give the character a chance to be adapted properly instead of the mess in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.
