Hands On: THN Test 3D iPhone Movie Viewer From Firebox

Everyone knows Firebox, right? Well, if you don’t, then you definitely should. The fine folks over there stock everything from LEGO Darth Vader alarm clocks to genuine bonafide DeLoreans – and everything in between, which includes plenty more film memorabilia and related crazy contraptions.

First up of which is this handy gizmo, the 3D Movie Viewer for iPhone. It does exactly what it says on the tin, turning YouTube videos into 3D movies simply by looking through the viewports. ‘Witchcraft!’ I hear you cry! Well, no; it’s simply a blend of two identical pictures, directed to the left and right eyeballs respectively to create the impression of a 3D image.

So that’s how it’s supposed to work – but does it? The short (and only) answer is a solid yes. The 3D is fine and the image quality depends mostly on the quality of the YouTube video you’re trying to stream. The range of content also depends on YouTube but there’s plenty to keep you going – just search for the tag ‘YT3D’ and you’re away.

You needn’t worry about your iDevice falling on the floor and shattering into a million tiny pieces either – we all know how fragile the glass backs of the iPhone 4 and 4S models are – as the phone slots and locks into place with ease. The controls can be a little awkward to access through the provided thumb holes but that’s no biggie. It’s a novelty product, granted, but one that’ll definitely add a touch more wow factor to your smartphone – especially as Apple looks unlikely to venture into 3D territory anytime soon.

Oh, and as a bonus, here’s the 3D Viewer as modelled beautifully by this reporter:

The 3D Movie Viewer is compatible with iPhone 4 and 4S. You can order your own over at Firebox right now for just £12.99.
