It raised more than a few eyebrows a few months ago when it was announced that Michael Fassbender would be starring and producing an adaptation of popular video game, ‘Assassin’s Creed’. Now the project seems to be gaining more steam as Ubisoft (the creators of the original game) has announced a partnership with production company, New Regency, to bring it to the big screen with Fassbender confirmed to be on board. Ubisoft CEO, Jean-Julien Baronnet, had the following to say:
“Bringing aboard New Regency’s renowned production and distribution expertise while maintaining our own creative and financial flexibility ensures that Assassin’s Creed will be a high-quality film that respects the lore and fans of the video game franchise.”
It is reported that Ubisoft themselves will be the main creative source behind the adaptation in order to ensure that it fits with the video games through the Ubisoft Motion Pictures subsidiary. It is also reported that while the film will feature the main protagonist from the first game, Altaïr (to be played by Fassbender), it will follow a new storyline that might tie into a new game that they will produce parallel to the film. As much as I am all for the fact that Ubisoft will have a bigger creative role in the production of this film than most video game companies usually do, I struggle to think of one good video game adaptation ever (maybe MORTAL KOMBAT…but I have a huge soft spot for that one). Michael Fassbender’s involvement does count in its favour, but I’ll be on the fence with this one probably until we get a trailer at some point.
