Back in 2010, we all saw the 20th Anniversary of David Lynch’s cult TV series TWIN PEAKS. Since the cult series ended in 1991, there has been an annual Festival in the town where it was filmed, Snoqualmie/North Bend, Washington but also in November of that year, producer Lindsey Bowden thought London deserved its own and created the first Twin Peaks UK Festival.
The inaugural event was hugely successful with screenings, performances from the Double R Club (a Lynch inspired burlesque and cabaret club) plus special guests including Catherine Coulson who played the Log Lady, Charlotte Stewart who was Betty Briggs (and was also Mary X in ‘ERASERHEAD’) and Julee Cruise whose hauntingly beautiful music really adds to the mystique of the show. All of this with official David Lynch Coffee and lashings of cherry pie and doughnuts, a TWIN PEAKS must!
Now, in 2012, they have bought the festival forward a month to October 20th, raised the visions and expectations and it looks to be one of the best yet. This years’ festival will be a celebration of David Lynch’s masterpiece film TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME as 2012 sees the 20th anniversary of the iconic piece of filmmaking. They will be joined this year by guests from the film and TV series Phoebe Augustine (Ronette Pulaski) and Lenny Von Dohlen (Harold Smith). Also returning to the festival is one of TWIN PEAKS biggest and iconic stars Catherine E. Coulson, who played the infamous Log Lady. But that’s not all, the Double R Club are returning with inspired acts to thrill, terrify and seduce! There will be big screen showings of particular episodes, and of course a 35mm print screening of the film we are celebrating, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME. THN spoke to organiser Lindsey Bowden, who had this to say about how it all began:
The reason for starting the Twin Peaks UK Festival was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this cult TV show, one that was a favourite of mine and many of my friends. In 2010, there wasn’t anything in London which really took note that this was a landmark in TV history and still influences many screenwriters today. It was Twin Peaks that paved the way for many TV shows both in the US and the UK and I felt that we needed to recognise how important David Lynch and Mark Frosts influence was and still is. In our first year we were lucky enough to get some fabulous guests and terrific support from all involved and that support has just grown each year and with each year the festival has become better and better. This year we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Fire Walk With Me and aiming for our most dramatic festival yet!
We’re sure it’s going to be pretty special. Last year they transformed Riverside’s Studio 4 into the Red Room Diner complete with David Lynch Coffee and of course those cherry pies and doughnuts, all laid out Agent Cooper style. They also created the Twin Peaks Art Gallery where fans showed off their work inspired by their favourite TV show and both of these original creations will be returning for this years festival. That’s not all though as they’ve joined forces with NBC Universal to promote the new David Lynch Box Set. Profits this year will be donated to their chosen charity, the Macmillan Nurses for Cancer Care plus NBC Universal have kindly donated a giant canvas of the opening scene of TWIN PEAKS signed by its biggest star Kyle Maclachlan to auction for charity.
