Director Ang Lee (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) has a talent for making consistently great films and showing the raw individuality in his characters. In his next film, THE LIFE OF PI, we follow the adventure of a 16-year-old boy called Piscine Molitor Patel – nicknamed “Pi” – who accompanies his father’s zoo animals across the Pacific from India to Canada. After a terrible storm Pi finds himself and Richard Parker, a Bengali tiger, the only survivors.
Based on Yann Martel’s award-winning novel, Lee’s adaptation is set to embraces the story’s themes of spirituality with a shout out to almost every major religion as Pi reminisces about his 227-day survival experience. It also promises sublime visuals and spectacular 3D effects, which refreshingly appear to be used for stylistic rather than box office purposes – this is one 3D movie that is not going to be a multi-dimensional disappointment. The film will also contain the ethereal warblings of classical chorals to Coldplay and Sigur Ros, and looks set to be one of Lee’s crowning achievements.
LIFE OF PI arrives in UK cinemas 20th December.
