Following the success of their pairing on DRIVE, actor Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn announced two follow-up projects that would reunite the duo. The first — ONLY GOD FORGIVES — was a crime drama penned by Refn about a gangster facing off against a police lieutenant in a Thai boxing match. Currently in post-production, the gritty thriller is expected to reach the UK in early 2013.
Unfortunately, the pair’s second project appears to have ground to a halt. A remake of cult hit LOGAN’S RUN was due to feature Gosling as the eponymous Logan 5, a man attempting to escape a futuristic world in which people are killed when they reach 30 years old. The 1976 sci-fi movie has been updated by DREDD screenwriter Alex Garland and may still have the DRIVE director attached. The leading man, however, appears to have jumped ship:
‘Rough news for those LOGAN’S RUN fans, I can confirm Ryan Gosling is no longer attached to the project,’ announced Variety reporter Justin Kroll on his Twitter.
Kroll offered no follow up information but is a veritable source so an official confirmation can’t be far away. With the feature still in its early stages it’s unclear if LOGAN’S RUN will continue with Refn and cast a new lead, or if the studio will also be on the hunt for a new director.
