RZA may up until now have been best known as a member of the ‘Wu-Tang Clan’, but with his upcoming film THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS, he is making his foray into directing and it seems safe to say that this is only the beginning.
We mentioned a few weeks ago that he has signed on to direct an adaptation of comic HAPPY! and now he has signed on to helm two new projects on top of that one. First up is a biopic about none other than Genghis Khan, which is based on a script by John Milius (who wrote and directed the original CONAN THE BARBARIAN and RED DAWN). The film will reportedly follow Genghis Khan’s son and grandson and, considering Genghis Khan’s real life exploits, will be plenty violent which based on what we’ve seen so far from THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS seems to be a good fit. He has also signed on to direct an action-thriller called NO MAN’S LAND which is written by Trey Ellis and David Klass, and it seems likely to be the next project that RZA will tackle. The synopsis is as follows:
A man who steals a powerful criminal’s diamond that soon proves to be far more valuable than initially thought. With the help of a dancer, he attempts to stay alive and cash in on the jewel. The story takes place during one night and has been described as having echoes of The Warriors.
This sounds like it could be a moodier and more restrained project for the former rap producer, which I think is a good thing. I think it’s a smart move for him to strike while he gets all these offers and it also sounds like he’s trying out a few different things which I think is commendable. It definitely seems like he has really gotten the bug for directing, let’s hope that he’s actually good at it as well.
THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS is directed by RZA. It stars RZA, Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, Dave Bautista, and Jamie Chung. It will arrive in UK cinemas on 7th December 2012.
