In a move to make everyone who has ever hated on George Lucas for his changes to the original STAR WARS trilogy, and for ever making the prequels, feel kind of ashamed, Lucas has apparently decided to donate the vast majority of the roughly $4 billion he made on the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney to charity. In 2010 he pledged to donate a large portion of his wealth to help in educating young kids and he has his own charity foundation called ‘George Lucas Educational Foundation’ which will in all likelihood be the recepient of most of that money. At the time, he said:
I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future—and the first step begins with social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt—as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.
In all honesty, this is a pretty damn awesome move by Lucas and I think it is a worthy cause. Even if he had donated a billion dollars it would’ve been insanely generous, so for him to actually donate the majority of four billion is great of him. It might not absolve him from som of the creative faults he has had in terms of the STAR WARS films, but it does make him a freaking great person. Good on you, George!
